A Scandinavian Garden

A Scandinavian Garden

Designed to bring together functionality and a smooth aesthetic, Scandinavian gardens use clean lines, block planting and cool tones to create a relaxing extension of the home. The style is easy to maintain and helps you to make the most of the warmest summer snaps.

So how do you achieve this look in your landscape?

Use hardy perennials. Because of the colder climate and the limited light in the winter months, Nordic gardens often use hardy perennials that can deal with short summers. Some plants can weathered all winter, from flowering blooms like Lupines and Delphiniums to herbs like Oregano and Bee Balm there are many varieties to choose from.

Incorporate crisp lines. When planning your garden, base your designs on light, clean lines to bring together different aspects of the garden. The layout doesn’t need to be symmetrical but having a linear tone will make the space feel calmer and more open.

Put enjoyment first. At their heart Scandinavian gardens are functional, sustainable and usable so when you plan your garden put your most important factors first. If growing veg is your focus then have raised beds and glass houses at the centre; if you’ve got a passion for entertaining then make social spaces the highlight. Warm days are hard to come by in colder climates so it’s crucial that you can make the most out of your garden, when you can. By making the garden an extension of the home through patios, fireplaces and seating areas you will be more encouraged to use the space regularly.

The right colours. Choose muted tones and pale colours when selecting gravel and paving. Smooth surfaces will help to accentuate lines and flat planes. Using Grey, Blue and White gravels like Polar Ice 20mm, Arctic White 10mm and Ice Blue 20mm can help add blankets of cooling colour, contrast these against Natural Stone paving to build a full Scandinavian landscape. If you have water features or focal points you can add distinction to these by using Duck Egg Cobbles and Pebbles or White Boulders for tonal variety.
